When the rain says your name

Original Submission by Yehini Anarya De Silva

When the rain says your name

The rain arrived without a sound,

Then buried every street it found.

It stitched the darkness to the night, And drowned the moon in sheets of white.

It fell upon the garden chair,

Where you once sat and combed your hair. It kissed the flowers by the gate,

As if the earth still chose to wait.

I whispered your name to the glass, And watched a thousand teardrops pass. The thunder answered from afar,

A broken echo of a star.

The rain grew louder against the door, As though it knew what I mourned for. And every drop that touched the ground, Became a heartbeat lost, unfound.

The morning came with shies of blue, But blue could never make me new. The world moved on, the bird still sang, While somewhere inside me, something rang.

And now whenever raindrops fall, I hear your voice beyond it all. I close my eyes and almost see, The hands that once reached out to me.

But rain cannot return the dead, Nor give me back the words unsaid. It cannot mend what time has torn, Or bring back one who won’t see dawn.
