The Symphony of Jozi

By Mia Haven

“Eita, my man!”

“Howzit going?”

One simple greeting,

A friendship growing.

“Hayibo!”

The whole street cries,

Echoed till

The “Yebo” replies.

“Shem, shem”

When life is mean.

“Eina”

For pain that has been.

Some days are lekker,

Some deurmekaar.

Some dreams seem close,

Some feel too far.

Ja, no…

That’s how we speak.

Just heart and humour,

No textbook technique.

The bru says, “Yoh!”

“Shap-shap!” we grin.

“Phuza, tjommie!”

Come, pull in.

The gogo laughs,

“Close enough.”

We understand,

Even when it’s rough.

“Special for you,

My friend,” they beam.

Every stranger

Joining the team.

It’s not the words,

It’s how they roll.

Like kwetsa lingering

Deep in the soul.

Autocorrect still

Shakes its head.

Mengels lives where

Hearts are led.

Its’s the love we share

For the green and gold.

A thousand stories

Bright and bold.

So, if you ask

What language you hear,

With a smile I say,

“It’s Jozi, my dear.”
