The Fall of the Venia Kingdom — Chapter 1

Setting: Venia @ 0845 – Colossal Palace Birthing Room

POV: Inumunto

I presented myself into the birthing room the moment the healer, Old Lady Kumiko, called for me. The sight before me was breathtaking. My beautiful mate, May, was cuddling our little bundle of joy in her tired arms. As a dog demon, the scents of blood and sweat filling the room were enough to rile the sleeping beast within me. Only the warmth of pure joy radiating from May through our mating bond could soothe the demon, who was now relishing the quiet wonder of becoming a father.

Watching May coo at our little princess was a memory I knew I would treasure forever.

"Koibito, are you alright?" I asked softly, alerting her to my presence.

"Mu-kun, come closer... look at her. She is so... beautiful. Eyes just like yours, my lord," May breathed, sounding almost winded. "And to answer you, my love... I am doing just fine."

Stepping closer, I caught my first glimpse of our daughter. Stretching out my arms, I cradled the tiny angel against my chest. An aura flared around the pup, and my own surged in response, acknowledging her as my sire. As our energy settled back beneath our skin, my little girl opened her eyes, gazing up at me with curious golden irises.

Golden eyes... only the strongest of our kind possess them, I thought, staring down at her. My adorable pup... child of a rogue dog-demon, domesticated by the beautiful priestess-demon queen of Venia.

"My love... you look so cute cooing at our little one," May teased, her melodious laughter echoing through the quiet room. "Who would have thought the hardened rogue of Venia could look so adorable?"

"Hum... well..." I muttered, rubbing the back of my neck in impish embarrassment.

Taking a seat beside her on the bed, I noticed the heavy exhaustion lingering in her posture. How I wished I could carry her pain for her, but the world does not yield so easily to our desires. Gently, I leaned down to kiss her and nuzzled the mating mark on her neck. The bond ignited between us, sending a comforting, tingling warmth across our skin.

"Love, what shall we name her?" May asked, gazing down at the pup. "The name should define her... InuSarah, or Sarah? I like the meaning of both. The first means Demon Princess, which she is by birth, and the latter simply means Princess. I prefer the first—it honours your culture and traditions."

"May, my queen," I replied gently, "though I appreciate your desire to uphold the traditions of the Inuyokai, I must decline the title. We are not on Koverian lands; we are in Venia, where the ancient priestess culture thrives. Our child is the first of her kind—a hybrid of both origins. I do not wish for her to be bound by Koverian pack rules nor restricted by Venian holy law. She is a princess, and a mixed-breed demon will face enough hardship in this world. I refuse to give anyone the pleasure of targeting her over a title."

May’s eyes glistened, a proud smile gracing her lips. "Well, you have thought hard on this, haven’t you... My Lord?"

She only ever called me My Lord when she was truly ecstatic with me.

"Then Sarah it shall be," May whispered to our sleeping child. "You do not need Koverian titles, nor do you need holy bands to restrict your power. You will achieve great things, my child. My blessings are with you always."

"Why are you so certain of her strength?" I teased, raising an eyebrow. "She is barely a few hours old."

May shot me a playful, annoyed glare. "Inumunto, please! Can't you feel her aura blended with yuki? She is going to be a formidable priestess-demon—and an alpha female by Koverian standards."

I smirked, closing my eyes to focus on our daughter’s essence. Most demons possess yuki as their spiritual vessel, while priestess-demons yield aura. Historically, these two forces counter-acted and neutralized each other—which was why the Council of Elders had opposed our mating, believing we would never produce an heir.

Yet Sarah existed. Not only did she exist, but both energies coexisted within her in miraculous harmony, without a single trace of conflict.

"I dare say I pity whatever Koverian or Venian male is fated to tangle with her," I chuckled.

May laughed heartily. "Well, Mu-kun, the only Koverian who is going to go on a paternal rampage when that day comes is you!"

"Perhaps," I conceded with a sneaky smirk, "but we both know you'll be on a maternal high, planning everything from the wedding to the grand-pups."

"Humph!" May pouted playfully, letting out a cute huff.

I gently handed our daughter back to her.

"She needs a pack mark, love," May said gently.

"Yes, she does." Placing my index finger over the pup's left clavicle, I allowed a strand of yuki to flow between us. "Princess Sarah Inuvenko Kimiko of Venia, welcome to our pack."

May smiled, though her black Inu-ears flopped slightly as her expression turned solemn. "Anata... the civil unrest... how is it progressing? Will our pack be alright?"

The dread I had carried from the morning council meetings spilled across our bond before I could suppress it. "Simon, Kimiko-oba, and I are handling it," I assured her, putting on a brave face. "Those wolves will get nothing. Not our lands, not our pack, and not our family."

May looked down, her voice barely a whisper. "I believe you, Anata... but we must plan ahead, lest our child becomes a slave of war."

25 Years Later...

The memory faded as the harsh voice of Simon snapped me back to the desolate present.

At least I ensured one thing, I thought, looking out over the ruined kingdom. Our child was not a casualty of the Great War. She is grown now—blind to her heritage, perhaps, but safe in another realm entirely.

The passage of time can be cruel, but love's endless bond will always find a way. To belong to a world, one must first learn to let go of what holds them to the past.
