The star and me

I pull the velvet blanket of the night

across my shoulders, shivering towards your spark. A million miles away, you hold your light, the quiet punctuation of the dark.

They call you distant, burning in the cold, a drop of silver in a trackless sea.

But every time your cosmic arms unfold, you spill your ancient history on me.

I track your orbit from my window sill, you trace my shadow on the spinning earth. The universe is vast, and wild, and still, yet we have found a private harbor’s worth.

You do not fade when morning comes to wake the sleepy world and push the dark aside. You wait behind the blue, for my sake, a silent promise where the shadows hide.

So let the galaxies map out their text,

and let the planets spin their heavy track. I’m anchored to the ground until the next clear night you choose to cast your glitter back.
