The Bi-weekly Goodbye

By Elzahn Klinck

You could imagine me sitting in my car watching you leave in my rear-view mirror as my lips quiver while I mouth ‘goodbye’ and a stray tear rolls down my cheek.

But that is a somewhat pretty picture, a sort of heartfelt one.

Instead, I sat in the car and watched you board the bus in my sideview mirror, gave a sigh of complete exhaustion as I held back tears and started the engine to leave, albeit without my heart, but at least before you could.

As I walked along the shore your name reflected in the waves.

A sight to behold, but in reality, only for my eyes made possible by my mind.

It shimmers in the lazy afternoon sun.

My gaze lands on a small flat rock and I wonder for a moment what tumbles and turns it took to wash up in my way.

I pick it up, give it a few turns and feel its sandy texture between my fingers before I turn to look at the ocean and throw it back in. It skips a few times before it starts to sink and I wonder what the odds are that it might wash up in your way.
