The Lock
Original Submission by Bhavya Jayabharathwaj
It’s the first time
I’ve seen a lock
on those doors.
I remember them open—
pulling me
into my grandmother’s arms
at the doorway.
I used to rush past
the rasped brass knobs,
past the temple-like door,
to greet my grandfather.
The pale green walls.
The old teak swing
hung on thick chains,
holding a childhood
I can barely reach now.
My grandmother’s glass figurines—
treasures
from distant places.
My father’s childhood toys—
gone now,
no longer watching
from the glass cases
I used to stare into.
No more dusty lofts.
No mosaic stairs
to the terracotta terrace,
my feet burning
as I ran to pluck mangoes.
No peacocks now.
That wall-long painting
still looms
over my parents’ room.
No cartoons in the AC at night,
curled on my grandparents’ bed.
I won’t sleep between them again,
or wake before sunrise
to play hopscotch
in the courtyard.
I won’t blow bubbles
and look at the lit temple
before sleep.
I won’t splash with my sister
in the river nearby.
No more summers there—
at home.
No coconut water
from home-grown coconuts.
No rain spilling
from the sloping roof tiles.
No stars above me
as I leaned
against the terrace wall,
my mother's Warli art
at my back.
The rusted gates clank shut.
They haven’t told me.
But I know.
I wish
I didn't.
I stare out the car window—
a wordless goodbye.
