A Lost Touch

I had finally

got used

to being alone.

Rustling leaves,

a heavy breeze,

the stillness of a voiceless calm.

Here at last.

Solitude without pain,

moments of peace

without a thought or question

about what I had lost.

Smiling at the branches above me,

a wordless shield

to keep me

in my own embrace.

Then you came along.

And the light I had barely reached,

my fingers aching,

stretching out to touch

at long last

slipped away.

On came the glasses,

the twitching thumbs,

the eager waiting

for what I wasn't sure

would come.

The spot under the tree

is dusted over.

The wind whispers

as if nothing

ever happened.

And I still stand

waiting

once again

for you.
