It's just

a mistake.

Or perhaps

I'm the one

thinking it

so trivial.

I see the wide eyes,

the open mouth,

the raised eyebrows

when I don't

get it right.

Was it because

I tried

so very hard

to always be right

that you thought

I'd be fine

on my own?

That my rightness

would keep me company?

Is it because

now

I correct your mistakes?

I save you

from yourself

even as

I drown?

Now

when I get it wrong

I say nothing.

I try fixing myself

in the silence

of your absence

because that

is what you taught me.

Maybe

I was the mistake

that you could never fix.

My words,

my face,

my every trait—

I don't know

which it is.

A mistake

can never

fix itself.

But all I can do

now

and forever

is try.
