Not Anymore

Original Submission by Bhavya Jayabharathwaj

I'm not her anymore—

that little girl

fighting over seashells.

And you

aren't the bobbed,

bunny-toothed girl

who got locked in the washroom

and thrown off the go-round

because of me.

At first,

it was just us.

Then it wasn't.

I thought

we'd stay us.

I'd stop maths problems

to answer

your rare call.

You told me not to call you—

so I didn't.

I listened,

advised,

apologised.

Because

you knew all the facts:

my favourite colour,

my hobbies,

the things that hadn't changed

for years.

But somewhere

along the way—

I changed.

And you

never got to know her.

For me,

friendship

lies in questions.

Not knowing everything,

but wanting to.

Did you stop trying?

Did I?

I would dress carefully

just to see your reaction

to something new.

I never got one.

I tried to tell you

small things,

big things.

You would smile

and tell me about your day.

I thought we had more time.

But since we're growing up

anyway—

let's grow up.

I am not

that girl in the pigtails,

and you

aren't her best friend.
