Alessandra Jade invites readers into a profound exploration of the human condition with her short story, The Linen Heart. In this piece, part of the Global Poetry and Creative Writing Competition 2026, she delves into themes of fragility and resilience, using a unique stream of consciousness style. The story paints a vivid picture of what it means to live with a heart that carries the weight of memories, emotions, and experiences, all while being trapped within the confines of human imperfection.

About the Work

The Linen Heart weaves a tapestry of introspection, using rich imagery and symbolism to explore the complexities of the human heart. Alessandra Jade's narrative style allows readers to feel the visceral imagery of a heart stained by life’s experiences. The mood is contemplative, urging readers to ponder the duality of purity and vulnerability. Through her masterful use of metaphor, Jade challenges us to reflect on our own lived experiences and the indelible marks they leave behind.

The Linen Heart

Alessandra Jade.

Ever beating in its plastic-bone cage, the linen heart squelches like a wrung, wet towel. Soaked in blood from the inside out, what was once so pure and white is now stained dark red with iron. Outward and inward and outward and inward; expanding, contracting; filling and refilling again and again and again.

Absorbed in shades of crimson, maroon, burgundy, every tissue, every fiber still marked with memory. Memories of moved blood and passing thoughts. Everything that has always been will always be somewhere soaked into the fabric of the cardiac weave. Chambers of secrets and whispers and quiet, silenced thoughts remain fixed in position, ever present, subconsciously omnipresent.

And maybe we are all linen hearts living in plastic cages: collections of stains on fabric. Maybe all we are, are bedsheets so far dyed in deep red, stained by the blood that we spill from ourselves, so far removed from ourselves, so tightly wrapped up in the binds we make to protect ourselves. But plastic cannot keep out what is bled from within. We can only pull the cage so tight until we explode in a great display of hemoglobin and yarn. And what then when we do? What seamstress, what surgeon will sew us back up? What then when the issues are no longer cardiovascular, and we’re left only with the broken pieces of what once was? A needle with no thread; a warp with no weft, a tear with no patch. An unfixable wound, a dark, deep, certain death.

And when that day comes where blood is spilled like grape-juice on the floor, when we all fall to pieces and unravel like untied knots, what will become of the fabric of which we are made? A bloodstain is bleached by peroxide. Erased. Forgotten. But its mark still remains.

All we are, are blood-soaked rags in plastic bags. A beating heart in a body of flesh, cursed with the blessing of being able to feel. What will become of us after we’ve been broken – denatured? Linens can only be bleached so many times until they begin to destroy themselves, until they begin to sallow and fall to shreds. And a heart can never truly be clean. As many times as the blood is filtered and renewed, the only clean heart is a dead one that was bleached.

Even the most purist of hearts is still drenched in its own blood, stained in the blood of others, doused in plights shared and isolated and foreign.

Everyone is a hero, and everyone is a villain, kept alive by a tainted, stained linen heart. A cavity in which we fill and refill our bodies with air, with life – oxygen. Beating and beating until it gives up, until it’s forced to stop, until its stabbed, shot, crushed, and dead.

No amount of bleach can erase sorrow. A patch does not undo but conceals a tear. And how many tears can a garment withstand before it disintegrates, before it’s nothing but a pile of shreds on the floor. To live a life wearing rose clouded glasses is to fight a losing battle. If beauty is pain, then I’m a suffering pageant queen, a pretty face to conceal a tortured mind – a tainted heart. Everything is nothing and nothing is everything, and we get to choose what that means. And maybe we are all linen hearts living in plastic cages: collections of stains on fabric. But maybe that’s exactly the thing. Maybe if we dye ourselves in darker and darker shades of red each day, we prove to ourselves the life we’ve lived. Let each stain be a brushstroke, each thread another stitch in the tapestries we weave. Let us let the blood flow through our veins and stitch ourselves up when we spill it. Let us cast our threads willingly, assuredly onto the loom. A linen body to match the heart. A linen mind, a linen soul. Let us live our linen lives until our hearts give out..
