In the Global Poetry and Creative Writing Competition 2026, LeAnn presents "The Journey of Our Lives; From Seed to Fruit," a short story that draws a beautiful parallel between human life and nature's life cycle. This reflective narrative invites readers to consider how life's experiences shape us, much like the growth of a seed into a fruit-bearing tree. The story's theme resonates with those seeking deeper meaning and connection in their journey through life.
About the Work
LeAnn's short story is a contemplative exploration of life's stages, drawing a vivid analogy between human development and the life cycle of a tree. The piece delves into themes of growth, transformation, and the rediscovery of innate purity. Through rich imagery and thoughtful prose, it suggests that our life's purpose extends beyond personal growth to include contributing positively to others, much like a tree that nourishes its environment.

The Journey of Our Lives; From Seed to Fruit
The journey of life takes each of us through different experiences. We encounter hardships, learn from them, gain wisdom, and gradually transform the way we see ourselves and the world around us. This led me to wonder: What if the journey of human life follows a pattern similar to the life cycle of nature?
Consider the life of a tree. The start of a new life begins with a seed that is small, pure, and filled with tremendous potential that has yet to be revealed. Given the right environment, the seed sprouts and begins to grows in fertile soil, with sufficient water, and sunlight to flourish. With consistent nourishment, its roots deepen, its stem strengthens, and it gradually develops into a mature tree. Eventually, it blossoms and bears fruit that can nourish and benefit others. The beauty of this cycle is that the fruit has now become an expression of the potentialities of the tree, yet within the fruit lies the seed; the same innate purity with which the journey began.
Would it be that our lives follow a similar pattern?
When we are born, we are like seeds filled with limitless potential. As babies, we possess a remarkable sense of purity. We are naturally receptive to the world around us, almost like mirrors reflecting what we encounter. When someone smiles at us with joy, we learn to smile. When we hear a soothing lullaby, we respond with our own little sounds. When we receive a comforting embrace, we experience assurance. We are also naturally drawn to beauty. A simple song, a gentle touch, a beautiful sight, or the laughter of another person can fill us with so much love. At this stage, we seem to naturally appreciate these things.
As we grow into childhood and adolescence, we begin to explore the world beyond ourselves. Like a young plant reaching toward the sunlight, we immerse ourselves in different environments and experiences. Being young and inexperienced, we are easily influenced by the world around us. We begin searching for communities where we can feel a sense of belonging. We find expression in how we dress, how we speak, what we value, and how we want others to see us. Like a plant enjoying the warmth of the sun and the refreshing rain, we may enjoy everything that life seems to offer. Yet, despite these experiences, a quiet emptiness can sometimes remain within us.
And eventually, we begin to ask: “Is the purpose of life simply to look good, to be admired, or to keep up with the world around us?”
As we become more aware of this emptiness, our attention begins to turn inward. We reflect and start questioning who we really are and what gives life meaning. We strive to develop good qualities, seek inner peace, and understand ourselves more deeply. We may retreat from the noise of the world, seek healing, or explore experiences that help us grow. With consistent effort, we begin to notice a transformation within ourselves. We become more patient, more compassionate, more grateful and more conscious of the forces around us.
We begin to think: “Maybe life is all about continually growing into better versions of ourselves.”
But even this stage can be difficult. Part of growing into a tree is that it must withstand storms while putting down deeper roots. We too, encounter moments when growth becomes painful. We may feel alone, lose confidence, or become discouraged by how far we still have to go.
At our lowest moments, we may look toward the sky and ask: “Where can I find the strength to remain firm and steadfast? What is the true purpose of my life?”
Perhaps the answer is not to grow alone.
As a tree depends on an entire ecosystem to flourish, likewise, human beings need one another. We naturally seek people who understand our struggles and share our aspirations. We turn toward our loved ones, friends, neighbours, and communities. Within a loving and encouraging community, something remarkable begins to happen. The qualities we have cultivated within ourselves begin to find expression. When someone smiles at us with genuine joy, we learn to share that joy. When we hear music that carries the culture of our community, we sing along. When someone offers us a comforting embrace, we experience assurance and become more willing to offer that same comfort to another.
It is as if we begin to rediscover the beauty that attracted us when we were a baby.
However, there seems to be an important difference in this experience. As a child, we experienced these things naturally and unconsciously. As mature individuals, we can begin to appreciate them consciously and intentionally. We no longer merely receive beauty; we learn to create it. We no longer merely receive love; we learn to give it. We no longer simply experience joy; we learn to become a source of joy for others.
This may be what it means for the tree to bear fruit. A tree does not grow merely for itself. Its roots draw nourishment from the soil. Its branches reach toward the sky for birds to find rest. Its leaves provide shade and its flowers bring beauty to nature. And eventually, it bears fruit that nourishes others. Likewise, perhaps the purpose of our growth is not simply to become better individuals. It is to express what is best within us to help others and serve humanity. The wisdom we gain can guide someone else. The compassion we develop can comfort someone who is hurting. The love we receive can become the love we give. All of this beauty that we discover within ourselves slowly finds expression through our words and actions.
In this way, our inner growth becomes an outward contribution. This brings us back to where we began. The baby who once found joy in a smile, beauty in a lullaby, and assurance in an embrace grows into an adult who can consciously create those same experiences for others.
That same beauty of purity was never truly lost.
It was simply covered by layers of experience, hardship, uncertainty, and growth. The journey of life is a gradual process of rediscovering that purity, strengthening it through wisdom, and allowing it to find fuller expression in the world.
In doing so, we return to the purity with which we began. Perhaps not as the same person we once were, but as a more conscious expression of the potential that was within us all along. Like the seed contained within the fruit, the essence of who we are remains present throughout the whole journey.
If both we and nature are creations of God, might we not find a reflection of our own life cycle in the cycles of nature?
“And the honour and distinction of the individual consist in this, that he among all the world’s multitudes should become a source of social good…”
