The Edge of Silence

Original Submission by Bhavya Jayabharathwaj

My back against the wall,

fresh mehendi drying on my palms,

my eyes with nowhere to rest.

They are all together—

paired off

on the sofa,

around the table,

on the floor.

Faces alive with conversation

that never opens for mine.

Voices gather near me.

I hear all they say

as though I belong

inside it.

But when our eyes meet,

theirs drift elsewhere—

to a phone,

a laugh,

another face.

Now and then

I smile for politeness,

answer when spoken to,

hold eye contact

just long enough

to feel it break,

then let my gaze wander again.

My cousin

belongs here easily—

teasing,

hugging,

smiling

like she has never been away.

They see her.

They know where to place her.

I have come back

a stranger to their ease.

I am not her—

not someone who slips in

as though she has always

belonged there.

So I sit in silence,

watching,

holding myself still

as their laughter reaches me

without once making room.

No one

breaks a silence

after it has settled.

So I let it.
