THE BEGGAR

There he stood,

All ragged up.

He was so near in distance,

But in thought

Yet so far away.

In a world of his own.

His big brown eyes and bushy hair

Gave him an innocent look.

But his missing tooth and unusual smile

Gave into the theme of cruelty.

His crooked elbows and shaky hands

Held out before him

Asked for money and

Probably a whole lot more.

His tattered coat,

That was swaying from side to side

In the wind,

Had barely given him warmth

During the winter months.

His bare feet said it all,

They were cold, cracked

And hurt in the uncomfortable weather.

I stood and gazed at him

For a couple of minutes longer

And then sent him away

With what he deserved!
