Tick-tock – tick-tock – tick-tock – ticktock …!

Detective Dayanand wiped the sweat rolling down his face with the back of his palm. He had made it inside the abandoned warehouse but where to from here? He shone his torch around – broken rafters, cracked walls, broken glass, discarded empty fast-food containers.

“I’m in. No sign of anyone here. I’m going in deeper.”

“Take care, Detective. I’ve got you covered on the outside.” Constable Mnisi had joined the force two years ago and had shown the dedication that Dayanand looked for in the force.

Detective Dayanand made his way stealthily to the end of the room. Scurrying on the floor – a disturbed rat. His back close to the wall, he went through the empty space. His torch searched the area. On the left, two toilets - missing doors and a stench that made him nauseas.

There were three doors in front of him. There wasn’t enough time to open all.

“Detective, 4 minutes to go.”

“Roger!”

“I drew a picture of us – Mummy, Daddy and me – one, two, three. Three is my lucky number.” A smiling girl’s face swam in front of her parents, holding up a page.”

Detective Dayanand turned the knob on door three. Nothing. He kicked the door with all he had. He heard the sound of splintering wood. The air was musty and dark. He moved the torch around the room. No windows. His torch searched the room – dirty walls, an old chair, a smelly blanket.

Was that a sound – a whimper?

He lowered his torch. He sucked in his breath. There she was, a tiny frame, huddled on the floor in the corner, small palms covering her eyes. His hands groped for a light switch. Nothing!

“Don’t be scared, little one. You’re safe now. I am a policeman. Just hold on tight.” He scooped her up in his arms and dashed towards the outer door.

“One minute left, Detective. Get out of there!” Constable Mnisi’s voice was urgent.

He was blinded by the light for a split second and then sprinted the next five-hundred metres to where the police vehicle was hidden in the bushes. He could feel the little’s girl’s arms clasped tight around his neck and he could hear her heart beating in his chest. “Hold on tight, baby! I’ve got you.”

They say that your life flashes by when you think you have reached the end. Detective Dayanand saw his wife’s patient face and his daughter’s voice rang in his ears, “Sanjana loves Daddy!”

As he dived into the front seat of the police vehicle, a loud explosion filled the air. Clouds of dark smoke rose out of the flames. The two policemen watched in horror and relief.

“The bastard wasn’t lying – 3pm on the dot and …kaboom! Radio in that we are on our way and they should have an ambulance waiting.”

“Will do, Captain.”

Both men were silent as they watched the warehouse go up in flames.

The little girl wriggled and turned her head to follow the sound of the explosion. She gasped and shuddered at the sight of the leaping flames and the clouds of dark smoke billowing out into the sky. Her large, brown eyes stared with horror and disbelief. Instinctively, she turned and buried her face into Captain Dayanand’s chest. He could hear her little heart pounding in his chest and was overwhelmed with a desire to protect her from the evil ways of the world, but he knew that her dreams would be tortured with what she had experienced. Her nightmare was far from over. He held her close and whispered soothing words until her breathing became more even.

As they neared the police station, the policemen noticed that a small crowd had gathered outside. The press and some placard-bearing protesters demanding justice were waiting for them.

“I’m not putting this little girl through any more drama. Drive through!”

The girl’s mother rushed forward to take her baby girl into her arms. She was sobbing and hugging and talking – all at the time. “Are you okay, my sweetie? Mommy’s here. You’re safe now.”

“I’m sorry, Ma’am, but we need to check if she’s fine.” The paramedic was gentle but firm.

There was a commotion outside. “Let me pass. I’m the father.”

Captain Dayanand looked at him steadily, “You’re the father who refused to pay the ransom? You better have a good explanation for your family.”
