NABWINGA

Shrieks of ululation drowned out the beating drums as Mutinta settled awkwardly onto the reed mat. Usually she’d join in frivolously, but today she was forced to stay silent.

Unpleasantly sandwiched between her two aunties, she gazed down at the red carpet within the lavish tent. She recalled the previous night’s festivities with her inapt advisors, ‘Never lock him out, always prepare a fresh meal for him, a man’s philandering could never ruin a home,’… endless emphasis on silent suffering as the key to a healthy marriage.

The gregarious MC’s voice jolted her, “Are you serious? Mxxxm! Is this the only money you brought?” the overzealous crowd yielded with gaudy laughter. Mutinta hoped Simwanza wouldn’t be put off by her raucous relatives.

‘That’s better!” the MC sneered as more notes poured into the sisal basket, “Are you ready to see our beautiful bride?”

Mutinta rolled her eyes in exasperation, then grinned as she caught a glimpse of him posing proudly in flamboyant regalia at the edge of the marquee. Surrounded by his crew, Simwanza anxiously prepared for his grand entrance. He spun around, momentarily distracted as Namonje, his childhood friend, arrived. She took centre stage amidst his escorters as she handed him a large bouquet, brimming with ruby hued roses.

She wasn’t invited. Sunflowers are my favourite – he knows that.

Mutinta watched them giggle flirtatiously as they conversed, in their matching citenge outfits - seemingly unaware of the looming crowd. She barely heard the MC’s brash comment as she stomped barefoot towards the serving bay, confident that the water in the large urn was steaming hot.
