For My Brother

Now that you are gone they all speak well of you, praising your hard work— especially those

who tired you

in relentless pursuit for more.

None but I say:

it was routine that took you. It was your quiet way

to move slowly

through every shade of blue.

Upon your noble brow

I notice faint traces of sorrow. The worn fingers, crossed upon your chest,

hide a heart

that not once

sprang fully into happiness.

The unwatched movies, the unheard music—

though often whistled softly in the privacy

of your washroom.

Yet I remember another you :

A curious young boy

trying hard to be cheerful,

his humour rising suddenly

like sunlight through clouds.

Once you sold your favorite toy- your small treasure - to buy a journey for me,

a little dream I longed for

but could not afford.

Even then, you gave away

what you loved most,

without a thought for yourself.

The rest you always longed for

is attained at last:

fast asleep, deeply in peace.

Your little daughter stands in shock, heartbroken over her telephone calls

you no more answer.
