Echoes of the Ember

I was full of faith

because they told me to believe

that my life was finally meaningful,

like a tree at last bearing fruit.

I was full of hope,

trusting my consort.

I was full of devotion,

hoping to uphold his legacy.

But the vermilion failed to keep its promise.

I could no longer trace the shadow of my lord.

My hope washed off of my forehead.

The blaze of devotion, now extinguished.

The ecstatic music, once played

by my clanging bangles,

was no longer to be heard.

They snatched away

everything I had once called mine.

Dressed in crimson,

adorned in rubies,

I was dragged to the stake,

with smoke already waiting

to wipe my name.

I was set ablaze

to honor the soul of my lord.

But this question

still lingers in my cinders.

Why wouldn’t they let us speak?

I lie there

deprived of my everything.

And even the dancing flames

refused to silence my embers.
