Baroness

Alessandra jade.

For even when

I am the queen

These lands

Do still lack their lustre.

I was a pearl

Impurely made,

And my crown

Did thorn upon my brow.

For every jewel

That I keep –

These shiny things

I beg to muster –

There’s a

Pin prick

From my wheel

And my gold’s only feather down.

I was there

Upon the mantle

Made of marble,

Trim and cloistered;

I was perfectly

Composed

To bear the note

In a sweet sound.

But the drought

Did dry me out

Like the sun

Upon an oyster:

At once

An enviable

Thing to keep;

I’m lost until I’m found.

And here

From high above

The world:

Well cluttered and so clustered:

I am sallow

In my shallow fields

And grain

Does weigh me down.
