When a Firefly Loves

I was a firefly,

lambently dressed in sage

free, I thought I was

swirling in the urn of my ashes

Slowly, I felt a hollowing

fading into the grey of my weary soul

As I prayed to God

I felt someone unlatch me

I believed I was free again

In the glow of his eyes

I lost my dread

felt luminous once more

But in a shattered mirror

I witnessed him unlatching another vessel

As time blurred

the air stifled with poison

I once again was

stripped of my glow

The venom persuaded me

to return to the cage of dreams

whispering the truth of masked love
