Vase of tears

I have a large glass vase bulbous and fine

Encased in my chest

It holds the tears of years and years

I hold it to my heart

Protecting that pain

Keeping it close

Hiding the hurt

The burden becomes too much

Do I tip it slowly seeping out

Slow rivers coursing into barren lands?

Do I pitch the contents in a rush

Wallpapering the door of my soul

With images of stripped-down ache?

Or will I stumble under the weight and let it drop

To smash shards of pride and fear into my legs

Leaving me to hobble grotesquely?

I have a large glass vase bulbous and fine

Encased in my chest

It holds the tears of years and years

Maybe I should pour it over my head

Let the water wash again down my salt-caked cheeks

In a strange but no less holy baptism.
