Up from the ash

They say the fire makes you stronger,

like I should thank the burn,

as if the pain was something good,

some lessons I could learn.

But all I feel are echoes

of nights that wouldn’t end,

no wisdom in the breaking—

just pieces I can’t mend.

I didn’t rise like phoenix ash,

I stumbled through the smoke,

holding onto fragments

of something that just broke.

They call it growth, like something

beautiful came from this,

but all I see is damage

in places people miss.

What did I gain from hurting?2

What did it make me be?

A little more exhausted,

a little less of me.

And yeah, I’m still here breathing—

but that’s not strength, it’s truth,

sometimes you just keep going

because there’s nothing else to do.
