About the Work

"Unspoken Truth" captures the delicate balance between vulnerability and silence. Through striking metaphors and carefully crafted verses, Nat Smith explores the hesitance and fragility of expressing one's deepest emotions. The poem's imagery, rich with contrasts like sunlight and shadows, evokes a sense of tension and release, culminating in a powerful reflection on the complexities of communication and self-expression.

Unspoken Truth

I hold my feelings like glass in my chest,

afraid if I move them they won’t ever rest,

they rattle and shimmer, too sharp to

explain,

like sunlight that somehow still manages

pain.

I open my mouth like I’m cracking a door,

let courage step in where it hasn’t before,

but my eyes start to sting like salt in a

wound,

and the moment I practiced dissolves way

too soon.

My voice turns to thread that unravels

midair,

each word barely hanging, too thin to repair,

it trembles and tangles, then falls out of

place,

like trying to run but forgetting the pace.

My throat closes up like a fist in a fight,

like shadows that tighten their grip on the

light,

every sentence I built starts to scatter and

go,

like smoke in the wind I can’t seem to hold.

And all of the truth that I wanted to show

shrinks small in my chest, with nowhere to

go—

so I swallow the storm, let the silence just

grow,

and all that escapes me is,

“I don’t know.”
