Growing Flames

Original Submission by Nat Smith

Growing Flames

I cannot keep setting myself on fire

Just to keep your hands warm

Love was never meant

To survive a single storm

We've fought to become better

And I know we've come so far

I'll never hate the memories

They'll always leave their mark

But I'm tired of gathering kindling

While my own flames burn low

I'm tired of carrying both our hearts

When mine has nowhere left to go

I've softened every sentence

Watered down my voice

Bit my tongue through countless nights

As if silence was my choice

I've stood up for you in every room

Defended what we had

Even when the weight I carried

Left my own soul feeling sad

I run and run for sticks to feed

The fire we swore we'd tend

While you sit beside the embers

Adding twigs now and then

Yes, you've gotten better

I won't pretend you haven't grown

But your healing came from watching

Me burn down to the bone

I don't regret the love we've built

Or every dream we've chased

But I can't keep becoming ashes

Just to keep this fireplace

I still want you

I really do

But love can't be one heart fighting through

If this fire is meant to last

Then meet me where I stand

Bring your own wood

Shield your own flame

Reach for mine with steady hands

Because a fire built on sacrifice

Will always fade from view

And love was never meant

To be carried by one

This fire was made for two.
