To Unlove

By – Kesar Gaba

Everyone fights their battles

in one way or another.

Sometimes it’s getting out of bed,

and sometimes it’s something as simple

as breathing.

Yes, that’s a battle too.

Sometimes it’s giving up

and joining hands with the enemy

’cause you can’t hold on anymore.

You fight with the people most dear to you

just to prove your innocence,

to show that you’re not lying,

to ask them to believe in you—

when the only people pointing fingers

are them.

And that’s the hardest battle:

to unlove the people you love most,

to learn that they are no longer on your side,

and you are left

to fight your own battle alone.

You never get to choose

which battles to keep fighting

and which ones to let go of.
