TO BE AND NOT TO BE

Hi, Ale:

...how are you?

There's something that's been on my mind for the past few days, but I don't know how to explain it to you.

Actually, we've touched on this subject before... and yet I feel we haven't managed to connect, so I'll try once more, for the last time... you know, everything comes to an end at some point.

It's a very strange thing, even though it happens quite often.

Do you remember? As I said, I've mentioned it to you before, but I have the feeling that perhaps you don't know what to say, how to react, what to make of it, or what label to give it. Because yes, that's generally how you are: you need to give everything a name. But there are so many things that have no name, and they're there, here...

...yes, right here. Things that exist but have no shape or colour, that you can't hear or touch. That's why they're so strange and difficult to explain...

Imagine, for instance, the phrase “thank you.” What shape or colour would you give it? Of course, it's an abstract concept, and yet so concrete... and still, it has neither shape nor colour.

Do you see?

...and now it's happened again, right here in our field, down there, near the far end, where the grass grows tall and, at this time of year, turns yellowish and grey at the tips, though it still has a little green lower down, close to the ground.

I went there at what I call the Rembrandt hour, when the golden light of the setting sun stretches the shadows of every object, and they begin to take on a life of their own. There is no longer any distinction between the concrete and the imaginary. Everything is one.

That's what happens: for an instant, everything becomes one, and there's no time to register it, to give you any more concrete details.

Do you see? I'd say so…perhaps I could taste it... Yes, I know, now you're going to ask me whether it's salty, sour, or bitter... Don't you see? None of those distinct flavours. Well, perhaps there is: perhaps a touch of sweetness and, at the same time, deep down, a shadow of bitterness.

I love you... and thank you for simply being.
