THROUGH MY EYES

Her heart was broken very young.

Her mother taken, her father undone.

Determined to live a better life,

against all the odds, she chose her own path.

As fairy tales go, a soldier she nursed.

She married that soldier, for better or worse.

She lived her life with her heart on her sleeve,

and spoke what she thought, whether or not we’d agree.

At times, we may have read her all wrong.

Her words could be bold, her opinions strong.

But that is not my gran’s final song.

Her legacy goes way beyond.

This was a woman who rewrote her script.

She soared like an eagle, despite one wing clipped.

She knew how a family torn apart

could crush a soul and harden one’s heart.

To see her family together

was her victory, her pride:

the family she loved, all side by side.

She lived for that day she planned way in advance.

Cookies and gifts were all part of the dance.

Nothing delighted her more every year:

our family Christmas, the laughter and cheer.

The last few days, her mind was clear.

We spoke of those who were so dear.

She knew full well her time had come,

her work on earth was nearly done.

A string of pearls around her neck.

Glasses off, with self-respect.

She posed and faffed with her silver hair.

She glanced at the pic, and quickly said:

“Who’s that?”

No words could answer her that day.

The memory etched on my heart to stay.

Instead, I kissed her on the cheek.

Her eyes drew closed. She fell asleep.

Oh Ouma, if you only knew

who I see in that pic of you.
