Three Whistles

10:37 AM

Location: Shimla

The tea nearly spills,

but I stir it anyway.

The phone keeps ringing;

I still can't lift.

I stir the tea,

and keep on stirring.

Lost in the steam.

In my garlicky breath.

Chopped onions.

Dried chilies.

Pickled jars.

A house of four.

Baba with his news.

Men in politics.

Women in the kitchen.

Hands rolled in wheat.

1:37 PM

Location: Kitchen

I stir the stew.

Tasteless again.

The stingy steel

has bitten my nails.

Two whistles.

Three sighs.

I whisk the eggs.

The yolk won't break.

I dream of writing.

Literature on my desk.

That should happen-

before I'm tugged to

dowry bells.

2:00 PM

Location: Balcony

Ninety pounds.

Twenty-five years.

I do work.

Only if cooking

counts.

I look in the mirror-

at its jagged bits.

She looks back.

I look away first.

I don’t see myself.

I see someone else.

She smells like laundry:

rumpled and creased.

I feel like I know her;

her name on my lips.

The last time I saw her.

She was with the books.

2:10 PM

Location: Dining

Maa was a dancer.

Years before I came.

Her anklets now lay in rust-

Silent in the attic's dust.

I see my future.

In the same rust.

She serves the dishes.

'Dal is too salty'-

Baba's voice held.

She eats on the same plate.

Last night's rice.

She pauses for once.

A gasp. A sigh.

And hides it too well.

2:20 PM

Location: Bedroom

I still didn't do the dishes.

The sink sours dry.

A wet plate slips-

the leftovers into

the drain.

I do nothing.

Dishes can wait.

Salt can be fixed.

Laundry can stay.

The whistles hiss.

I pick up the pen.

Ink presses wet.

I don’t dream.

I now write.

END.
