The Witness Within

There is a shadow

that watches everything,

not with eyes, but with a knowing

that never asks to be seen.

It stands beside

what my real self endures,

a silent witness to every tremor,

every unspoken war.

It does not change nor speak.

It carries no intention of its own,

yet it stays, unmoved,

like loyalty carved into light.

I know...

it’s only a metaphor,

a trick of light and form...

but tell me,

who has ever been more constant?

It may disappear

when the light is gone,

not out of abandonment,

but perhaps it refuses

to watch me in my darkness.

It returns

only when I rise toward light again,

as if to say,

“I was always yours,

just waiting where you could see me.”

So close, so quietly devoted,

never asking to be named,

never needing praise...

How strange, isn’t it?

The one who never leaves

is the one we never thank.

Because it does nothing, causes nothing,

just exists, beside us, with us, as us...

forever silent,

forever there.
