The Witness

In your waking, I see you there;

One foot crossed over to my side.

Even after yesterday’s war I declared,

Wooing me is what your body decides.

In your fervour, I see you there;

Nose flared as you refine your craft,

There is nothing quite like a man who cares

For his purpose as much as making me laugh.

In your anger, I see you there;

Composure giving way to emotion

A loaded gun, a finger in the air

A single moment, in our memory frozen.

In your triumph, I see you there;

On the mountaintop with the sun behind you

You raise your fists up in the air

I beam with pride, I see what you went through.

For better and for worse

In health and in sickness

You see me and I see you

Through every strength and weakness.

Intimacy aside, is this not what we all seek?

Is that not why we put our lives on display?

For to be loved is to be seen

To be witnessed at the end of the day.

My dear, you are a sight to behold

And I thank God I get to see you

And even as we grow grey and old,

I thank God you get to see me too.
