The Things We Already Know

Are we really unaware

of what is happening to us?

Maybe we know.

Maybe we have known for a while.

And looking away seems easy,

giving things different names so they hurt less.

Patience we call it while waiting for something to change.

Some call it hope when we are afraid to let go.

Telling ourselves there must be another version of the story,

one where everything makes sense in the end.

Sometimes we believe our own stories so deeply

that we forget...

we were the ones who wrote them.

But... the truth is strange as ever.

It doesn't always arrive loudly...

it sits quietly inside you,

waiting for the moment you finally stop arguing with it.

Maybe that is why we pretend not to know.

Because knowing the truth is one thing.

Living with it

is another.
