The soft architecture of remaining

The Soft Architecture of Remaining

I have been practicing the art

of staying in rooms

after the conversation has ended.

Not the dramatic leaving—

the quiet remaining.

The way a person sits

with the last of the tea growing cold

and does not rush to fill the silence

because the silence has finally become

a place that can be trusted.

There are entire years

folded into the space between

what we meant to say

and what we managed.

I used to want to iron those years flat,

make them neat,

make them make sense.

Now I let them keep their wrinkles.

I let them keep the exact shape

of every almost.

Tonight the moon is a thin white scar

above the rooftops

and the city is practicing its own kind of quiet.

Somewhere a train is moving through the dark

without passengers.

Somewhere a window is open

just wide enough

for the night air to enter

and rearrange the papers on a desk.

I think of all the versions of us

that almost happened.

The ones who stayed.

The ones who left earlier.

The ones who found the right words

on the first try.

None of them are gone.

They live in the soft architecture

of what remains—

in the way light still falls

across an empty chair,

in the way a name can still rise

unbidden in the middle of an ordinary task.

I no longer ask the past

to explain itself.

I only ask it

to keep a small door open

so that the present

can occasionally look back

and recognize its own face.

If there is any prize worth winning,

let it be this:

the quiet courage

to keep the pages of the life

unfinished,

to leave the margins wide,

to believe that what was almost said

still belongs to us

in the most honest way—

not as regret,

but as evidence

that something in us

once reached

toward a larger tenderness

and in reaching,

became real.
