The River in the Mirror

The woman looks into the mirror, her eyes locked onto her own reflection.

What is actually in that gaze? It isn't just one thing. It’s a messy, crowded intersection. Is it fear? A flicker of worry? Or is it that weathered, hard-earned self-love and determination? Some moments, it looks like a completely blank stare, the kind where the brain just pulls the plug to get a second of silence.

She stands there taking stock of the years that have flown by, while simultaneously trying to map out a completely different future. A sharp, nagging pain in one corner of her body flares up, demanding attention, but her mind instantly drifts to something else; the unspoken hurt she detected beneath the polished mask and sad smile of someone she spoke to earlier. Then the traffic shifts again. She tries to hype herself up for her upcoming workout session, only for a tired voice in the back of her head whispers that, maybe she should just quit and call it a day. And just like that, her focus swerves. She catches the glimpse of a mother and her teenage son nearby: the boy speaking with such patient loving devotion as he teaches his mother the absolute basics of strength training. Just watching them transports her to an entirely different world of thought.

The human mind is a remarkable chaotic thing. Thoughts and feelings crossing at lightning speed, a frantic criss cross traffic jam. How are we supposed to make sense of any of it? How do you filter a traffic jam? How do you detach from it?

Maybe you don't.

Maybe the trick isn’t to organize the traffic, but to step off the road entirely. To just allow the thoughts to float and fade, exactly as they are. Like a monk sitting quietly on a riverbank, simply watching the water flow by. Sometimes, dry twigs drift past. Sometimes, decaying ugly carcasses. Sometimes, a breathtaking flower floats right into view. The monk just sits there, completely still, observing it all. They don't dive into the water to rescue the flower, and they don't run away in horror from the carcass. They just let the river be a river.

She takes a deep breath, lets her shoulders drop, and watches the ripples in her own reflection begin to settle.
