The Mountain Gazelle by Wong Eu Kenn

You’re the hunter,

and she’s bleeding out from an arrow you’ve embedded in her neck.

And you take your switchblade out, saw off bits of her horns,

reap all your rewards.

Do you not feel any remorse, seeing all of us as prey?

We’re cowering in fear behind bushes,

dreading the sound of your boots, any glimpse of your stature.

Yet you trample over my friend, ground your boot on her stomach as she yelps.

One day that summer will pass, and so will any trace of you and your arrows.

My companions will tell me to shed my worry, but my unforgiveness will stay.

Because an animal bites back when it has been bitten,

flowers are still growing from the lives you’ve taken.

Poppies in the field, they’re breezy in the wind,

how much more pain do you think we can take?
