I Was Raised by a Pack of Cigarettes

Kyla Jagger

I was raised by a pack of cigarettes.

A warning label, if you will.

She carried smoke

like it belonged on her.

Lipstick stains on white filters,

smoke curling itself around gold bangles

that announced her arrival

before she ever spoke.

Ash caught

against teased blonde hair

that reached for heaven

while everyone else looked for somewhere to hide.

A sound somewhere between church bells

and a loaded gun.

By the time the bangles stopped singing,

the school knew

someone was already in trouble.

Hallways

parted around

her the way

a sea of fish

makes way

for a shark.

She never had to bare her teeth.

Predators waste energy on threats

only when they’re hungry.

Mercy hung from her fingernails,

the way meat hangs

between a wolf’s teeth,

recognisable

only after the shaking stopped.

I watched bullies

hold their breath.

I watched grown men

search the floor

for somewhere safer

to put their eyes.

The world insists

the deadliest things

come with claws.

Mine came

with a French manicure,

teased blonde hair,

and enough jewellery

to sound like an alarm.
