The Magic Lettuce Box

Connor had never been one for gardening. He felt it was a bit of a bore. His grandmother, however, was all about it. One day she visited him and gave him a plain wooden garden box. It was shabby and well-used, but she said it was special. She wouldn’t say anything other than that. Along with it, she had given him a packet of lettuce seeds.

Connor’s curiosity got the best of him. He decided to plant the lettuce seeds. He watered them. Fertilized them. Then he waited. And waited. Nothing happened. He grew frustrated.

One day, he decided to vent his frustrations to the empty lettuce box. He complained about his day, his school, his friends. He talked about deeper feeling too, like how he felt too small to make a difference in the world.

The next morning when he woke up and went to check his lettuce box, something spectacular had happened. The lettuce had sprouted! But this wasn’t just any lettuce. As his grandmother had said, it was special.

He discovered each piece had a special power. One piece let him talk to animals. He used it to convince a silly squirrel to feast on other plants and leave his lettuce alone.

Another piece helped him to grow a few inches taller. This allowed him to finally be tall enough to ride the big roller coaster at the local amusement park.

The third piece he tried gave him the ability him to bubble his worries and simply pop them away. He used this to help manage his anxiety.

Each piece of lettuce seemed to come with a solution to one of his problems. This was going to be the best summer ever!

Connor continued to use the magic lettuce’s powers for himself. Whenever he became stuck, he went to the lettuce box and picked another piece. This seemed to work for a while, but he became greedy. When he noticed others struggling, he thought to himself how lucky he was to have the lettuce all to himself so he didn’t have to worry anymore. He never once considered sharing the lettuce.

One day, the lettuce began to turn yellow. The leaves began to wilt. It slowly lost its magical powers. Connor tried watering it more. No use. He tried moving it into more sun. No luck. It seemed the magical lettuce was destined to die.

It couldn’t have come at a worse time. He still had so many problems to solve! How was he supposed to make it without the magic? It had given him the confidence he needed! He sat on his front porch, crestfallen. His dream summer was over.

Suddenly, his neighbour Tommy swerved by on his bike. He quickly lost control and crashed right in front of Connor. Tommy had skinned his knee and it was bleeding. Like, really bleeding. He needed help, and he needed it quickly.

Without a second thought, Connor rushed to gather the last of the magic lettuce and gave it to Tommy. His wound was magically healed! But that was the last of the lettuce. There was no more left for Connor to use.

Or so he thought.

When he turned back to the lettuce box, the wilted greens had sprung back to life! The true magic wasn’t in the lettuce. It was in compassion, patience and understanding. When he acted selflessly without expecting magic for himself, the box bloomed even more bountiful than before. This was the lesson his grandmother had wanted to teach him. The true magic was in sharing and kindness towards others. You get back what you give to the world.
