The Intersection of Supplications
Do pleas to the divine unseen inch across the ground like sunlight?
And do they glimmer upon the faces of those across the aisle?
Do the whispers of a tear-stricken boy asking for help from the rubble
Get answers from the most devout of agnostics, whose only faith is shattered
By the unshakable folly of man’s desire to sunder and burn?
Does the tidy coat jacket and shined coin of a doe-eyed girl
Carry the cosmic weight of a gentle kiss and hug across the desert
Where the young girl in a hijab gives the same thanks of a warm summer day
Even if her prayers fall unto the mat, instead of a pew?
Would it matter when they both gaze at the sky and gasp at a bright full moon?
Is it unjust for one who believes in the saccharine joy of a world after death
To bow in silence at the ruins of a mosque, a synagogue, or a chapel?
Should I list my hopes for safe passage to paradise in paper,
And submit them to the transliteration of their chosen holiness?
When did we start taxing prayers for their denominational root?
For the world will turn into an ashen wasteland, but not by missile or waste
But by the hands of strangers stabbing each other’s cheeks on sight
When we should all remember that we still bask under the same morning
And we all sleep under the raven sky, under the glinting stars,
Underneath all the wonder of a million possibilities wrapped into one horizon.
So I send my appeal to the God I was born with, but I refuse to be ignorant
For the names that others supplicate to, be it Allah, Elohim, Shiva, Amaterasu;
Be it to the universe, the karmic, the ancestors in the air, or the mother earth;
I ask only that I can one day meet your loving children and smile at them
Without a need for a name or a sign to speak as friends once again.
