The Heart of the Storm

By Mia Haven

We are the storm at the end of the day,

The thunder across a thirsty sky.

We were the promise whispered through the night,

While still they wonder why we try.

We are the lightning splitting the dark,

The beauty sharp enough to scar.

The wish that things would finally change,

Yet we love them just as they are.

We are the smiles behind the swearing,

The shame muttered through a grin,

The friend who arrived with nothing

And leaves with a fully packed lunch tin.

We are the ones who curse each other,

And know exactly where to bite,

But we’ll stand shoulder to shoulder

If someone else decides to fight.

We are the promises left broken,

The words that never became true,

The dreams we buried in the dry earth,

And the grass that never grew.

We are the hands that give when empty,

The welcomed offered without pay,

The stranger who will stop to help

And lose an hour of their day.

We know the weight of waiting,

We know what we are aching for,

We know the rage of loving something

The gives so much, yet asks for more.

For we are not the storm alone,

But the wildness that cannot be erased.

We are a thousand hearts still beathing

In this stubborn, battered place.

We’ll beg the storm to hold a day,

Yet no matter how much we’ve cursed the sky,

When we rain rolls in, we’ll make a plan,

Because we cannot bring ourselves to say goodbye.
