The Great Inheritance

Original Submission by Jordyne Keppler

The Great Inheritance

I listened to the voices, as many as there were; They said:

“Indulge in the feast, drink in the abundant pleasures, Come see, it’ll only take a moment

Your youth is slipping away

So why not abuse it?

You serve no purpose anyway

Born to decay

Give in, don’t be mundane

Save goodness for old age.”

In an attempt to escape,

I entered a place

And inclined my ear to The Voice

Who said to me:

“Do you not know you were made for more? You know about sorrow,

But that is not for what you were called.

There is purpose in this season;

Dry as it might seem

There is reason for your suffering

You are not stuck in waiting

I am preparing you for abundance

But not as the world sees

For where you are weak, my power is made complete.

Through you I see bonds being broken

Like never before

Fortified gates bursting wide open

Hope restored

So let go of the seducing ways of old

And seek the path to goodness

That leads to the streets of gold

No need to wait; you’re the one He has chosen There is not a perfect moment for which to receive The inheritance, which is yours; take it now and see How the power that has been given

Is nearer than it seems.”

Writing Process and Motivation

The Great Inheritance is made up of fragmented pieces of my personal poetry written over these past three years, since I began my Bachelor of Arts journey. Inspired by the theme “power and purpose”, the poem describes my own journey of being transformed from someone who was easily tossed around, to someone who is now sturdy in my faith, identity, and calling. The first stanza of the poem describes the world’s temptations towards giving in to pleasure and backing away from fulfilling one’s true purpose. Similarly, when I first began university, I allowed the world’s thinking to shape my own, stumbling in and out of bars hoping to find some meaning and connection – power and purpose.

The second stanza describes the narrator in a seemingly hopeless season of life, but the Voice of God speaks to her and reminds her that she has been called to fulfill far greater purposes, and that her power lies in the very things she believes make her weak. The third and final stanza is a foreshadowing of the manifestation of that power and a call to let go of the things that prevent us from accessing our true calling or purpose. While I still feel as though I am in a “waiting season”, I have this hope that keeps me grounded and simultaneously propels me to move forward, knowing that each season (even the still ones) serve a divine purpose that I might only comprehend fully one day with my heavenly eyes.
