The Ghost of Almost

I never let myself own what I desired

because I had already decided

it was never meant to be.

So I made my mind work for the impossible,

and called the suffering a task.

Sometimes it cries, “Let it go.”

Sometimes it almost does.

Then a strange part of me returns,

smiling like a ghost with the same old reminder.

Unachievable...

And still, my mind picks it up again.

It finds peace in fighting what cannot be fixed,

walks roads no one sees,

limps, hides, breaks

and somehow survives.

Until the ghost finds it again,

and whispers... not “Try once more,”

but...

“What will you do with yourself, if there is nothing left to chase?”
