The Faerie Dream

The faeries of my childhood

No longer look the same.

They seem too small, too overgrown,

Too fragile now to name.

Their silk spun dresses hang like cobwebs

From their slender frames.

Their wings once tipped in silver light

Now shiver like leaves in rain.

To my aging eyes they flicker

Dancing weak and dim,

Where once they blazed like candlelight,

They’re now so pale and slim.

Yet sometimes in the mirror,

When the light is soft and low,

I catch a glimpse of glitter

Where no glitter ought to go.

So maybe they don’t shimmer

In the way they used to do,

But something of them lingers still –

A thread I always knew.

And though my knees my creak with time,

And my hair is turning grey,

The faeries of my childhood

Have never gone away.

They’ve moved on to the little ones

That dance around my feet,

And in their eyes the faeries shine,

Their wonder, pure and sweet.
