Days You No Longer Thread

I never imagined a life in which you no longer thread my days.

Where you no longer walk in and out of my line of sight,

where I no longer look up and find you passing by,

where the ordinary rhythm of Monday through Friday

no longer carries the quiet possibility of seeing you.

I had settled into the thought that I would always see you.

Every few hours.

Walking in and out of your room.

Crossing the hallway.

Passing through my day as though you had always belonged there.

Five days a week.

Twenty days a month.

It was such a small thing, really—

your mere presence,

never promised, never announced,

just there.

And somewhere along the way,

without my noticing,

I grew accustomed to you being part of the architecture of my days.

I think I began to believe

that you would always be there.

Not mine.

Not even necessarily near me.

Just there.

Close enough to appear at the edge of an ordinary afternoon,

close enough for my eyes to find you without asking,

close enough that your existence became one of those little certainties

I never thought to question.

Until one day,

I woke up to the possibility of a life

in which you no longer inhabit my days—

not even in passing.

And perhaps that is the strangest grief of all:

not losing someone who was ever yours,

but losing the quiet assurance

that you would keep passing through.
