Queen of Self-Sabotage

O Queen,

Why do you refuse to hoist your white flag of surrender,

even as all your legionaries are slain?

On this grey frontier, they perish in vain;

Your chance of conquest slowly slips, eludes your loosening grasp;

They valiantly fight until pardoned by Death,

a conceited man’s battle that guarantees no triumph.

O Queen,

Why do you obscure your tarnished crown,

once golden and bright?

Besieged by your protective arms, indeed a seldom sight,

even to those you hold dear.

Out of love, they try to polish it,

restore its former shine,

but alas, it forever remains a token of your reticence.

O Queen,

Why do you dread searching for your King?

You crave affection as a prisoner craves his freedom,

yet cast it away in the name of honour when it comes.

Each suitor’s profound promises of eternal love you deem empty and meaningless.

You fear a fruitless future, a life sentence under the guise of matrimony,

so you vow to reign in sacred solitude,

betraying your innate desire.

O Queen,

Why do you reject the very nature that makes us human?
