The Crowning of a Black King

I have been listening to Nesta since I was a boy.

There is something about the rhythm to his songs

that speaks to the soul and lifts it.

There is one song in particular

where he reiterates the words of Mr. Marcus Garvey:

"We must emancipate ourselves from mental slavery,

for though others may free our bodies,

none but ourselves can liberate our minds."

As a boy I understood this clearly,

so I sought to learn about the first kings —

the men that came before

the men that came before me.

This is where I found King Mansa.

This is where I found Shaka.

Here is where Mandume spoke to me.

They showed me who I was

before the white man came,

before I was force-fed

this borrowed language.

That the darkness in my skin is an inheritance.

I carry with me the first kings.

I am their dream of a people

and the pride of a nation.

The rhythm goes on,

and Nesta asks:

"How long shall they kill our prophets

while we stand aside and look?"

For a time these words were alien to me.

My colonized mind failed to see the prophets,

for they were demonized —

angels stuck behind demon masks.

As though we were children of a lesser god,

How could I fail to see me?

How could I not see

Kwame Nkrumah,

Patrice Lumumba,

Thomas Sankara,

Julius Nyerere,

Jomo Kenyatta,

Samora Machel,

Steve Biko,

the Ethiopian prince Haile Selassie,

Amílcar Cabral —

all prophets we allowed them to kill?

Mr. Garvey once said:

"Look to Africa for the crowning of a black king."

I believe he is here.

Young lion, claim your mane.

He has come,

and his roar terrifies them.

For there is no dignity

in denying my identity.
