I THINK ABOUT IT, ALL

It's the 16th of September.

Yesterday I wished "T" a happy anniversary.

Three days before that, my little boy turned six.

And a day before that, is one that haunts me

like a stubborn ghost.

I am thinking of home,

but today home is not a place —

it is a space in time.

A time when Hokweni and Akapa were still alive,

and Shipigana still wore suits

and lied to young teachers

that he was a businessman,

before the mental breakdown came.

A time when I knew exactly where Atushe was

and a week wouldn't pass without me seeing that brother.

Here Tate still has that panga that excites Meme,

a time before the hair chose to retreat.

Here we are still living in Nau-Aib

and Aunt Fransiska is only 2 minutes away.

There is an immortal longing

for these people to see the man I have become.

I silently wonder in hopeful anticipation,

but hope is a thing with no voice.

My mind stumbles on these thoughts.

I hate the clumsiness of autumn.

This season brings queries with it.

In this sphere of time, it's only Meme and I.

Tate is out being a young truck driver,

Magano is living in town and acting white,

Johnny is but a dream —

a ghost of what is to come.

Here I am a weapon formed against Meme's peace.

Here the world is kind and has a gentle innocence —

or maybe I do.

I am young and filled with revolutionary dreams.

I just finished reading Malcolm X

and Pac's music makes sense to me.

I am dying to read The Evolution of a Revolutionary.

I am a boy ahead of this time.

I just started gym-ing.

I am beginning to lose my baby fat.

A year from now a man will show me great kindness

and I won't know he is Epafu's father.

I am loud and well spoken.

At this time I do not have my father's quiet.

Here Russell is still making music,

and is the closest thing I have to a brother.

He protects me as though I am Jasper

and I would follow him into the fire.

If someone at that time would tell me

that in 4 years I would have a son

with my kindergarten crush,

I would bet three toes and a hand

to the impossibility.

Two heartbreaks await me

and I am oblivious to the fact

that this organ given to love

does not stop to rest.

I hope Frieda has achieved

everything she sought out to be.

I am now a peaceful soul

with a quiet coldness to it.

I am proud of the man I am beginning to be.

But a part of me begs the question:

at what cost?

As though I have given up so much —

have I?

This season brings with it queries.
