The Soul of a Poet

I am the bird that spreads his wings

to measure the sky,

he who dares to claim it

and call it his own.

I am a child birthed by imagination,

fathered by curiosity.

There part of you that craves freedom —

that part they taught you to tame.

The beast they caged for no crime —

only fear he turns a monster.

I am the voice of a slave

bound in chains by the colonizer,

whose freedom only exists in song.

I am a mother's cry in the wind,

rumbling like summer thunder.

I am the organ that brews beneath her chest

for her child's return.

I am the sun shining gold,

granting a complexion dark like coffee

and crystal like black jade.

I am the beauty that surrounds the stars,

the one who permits them to shine;

to my tickle, they twinkle

like light dancing in Meme's eyes.

I am autumn's fall, teaching pain.

I am he who whispered to Shakespeare

when he wrote Hamlet,

the one who danced with Maya

when she wrote Phenomenal Woman,

he who hummed with Pac

when he wrote Dear Mama.

I am the rhythm behind the rhyme,

the answer to your "why,"

the wonder in the back of your mind that inspires,

he who fuels your drive.

I am the amputated spirit,

crippled by a society

that forced me to lose my shape

to fit into their boxes,

condemning me to a slow death.

But there is beauty in this still,

for I will be he who dies once

but is born a million.

I am the soul of a poet.
