The calendar turned cruel

The calendar turned cruel in the year I turned twenty

when the pillars of my world fell four months apart.

In May the hospital doors closed behind my grandmother leaving me with a promised later that never arrived and a guilt that tears at the fabric of my soul.

Then September came with its own sudden silence four days after my birthday my father was gone.

Leaving the summer promises sitting in the dust of August and the

November visit hanging in the air like a ghost.

I blame my own feet for not forcing the way forward for letting the loud voices keep me from his door until the next time I saw him was the last time of all.

Now I am left standing in the wreckage of the aftermath wondering why every step must be a mountain to climb carrying the heavy love of the two who truly saw me while trying to forgive the child who was only trying to survive.
