Ricky

I was 58 when Ricky was a year older

We drank beer like water from a fountain there

Fog blurred the mirrors from cigarette smoke

The air smelled like lust in songs.

I was 17 when he brought home a girl

Love of his life, a sheep with no shepherd

He knew her smell, charcoal ash

He touched her often, kissed her when no one's around

I was 18 when he turned broke

I found a girl when he lost his

“She was for the streets,” Ricky said

“I raised her then, like a shepherd with the lost lambs”

I was 20 when he was drunk

He killed a man like he killed pigs

Called it a bad day he would forget

And went home that day, drunk again

I was 30 when Ricky came on the news

The news! I weeped and cried back then

His face was bloodied, nose broken

Scars and gunshots here and there

The boy who killed him called it revenge

Or so he said.

I was 58 when Ricky was a year older

I broke the nose of the little boy

And called home; kid was bloodied and dead

Scars and gunshots here and there

The knife in my hands trembled ever so

Up my throat. I wouldn't let go

I was 17 when he brought home a girl

That I knew, then I was none

Not one there to weep at my loneful grave
