Pipedream

My small feet padded on the stones of halls I dreaded, I run to my teacher holding up my dreams with utmost honor. I told her ‘How wondrous would it be to fly up high where the birds sing bright like the sun itself danced for the joys of their songs and how comforting it would be to fly amongst those beautiful clouds’

Her face scowled down at me as I froze in place ‘Fly?’ she uttered ‘How idiotic. Do you not see? You have no wings to fly and no feathers to sore. You are not a bird but only a child;

It would be as if to reach for the highest apple on a tree. Why not reach for the apple that is closest?’ she scoffed

‘Be more realistic. Why not be a Firefighter, a songwriter or perhaps even a builder. Do not bewilder yourself with dreams you will never reach.’ she said harshly and sent me home in a huff. I couldn’t keep my tears as a bluff.

My feet dragged along the soft grass, My father stood among the tall trees that littered these fields, he crouched down and the sound of his voice echoed through the leaves. 'Why does your face sag and water run...Where's that smile I always love.’ he said

My face drooped lower as I told him what my teacher said

And soon he smiled, ‘Do you not see?’ He said before lifting me up into the air

‘I’ll give you the wings to fly and the feathers to sore;

My child, I encourage you. Reach for the highest apple on the tree for it is the sweetest. Do not listen to what they say but find a way for your dreams to run like the rivers that flow through the rocky bays and truly I tell you, You will fly higher in the sky’s than they ever thought possible!’ My father then threw me into the air with joy like no other and truly that day, I felt like I was flying.
