Not so little anymore

By Tlhalefo Mokalake

Are you not too young?

to be sending waves into my heart

Am I not to consider you one who is little?

I saw you in the light

of safe affection

But boundaries slowly disappeared

I convinced myself you were little

But I look at you now, a man has appeared!

I was meant to lead the way

Now I fear I can't walk it without you

“Age does not matter”

are words I would never utter

But with each day that I see you

They seem to become true

to my heart and mind

The words my tongue refuses to find

Little one, or should I say mature one?

Can I treat you like a mature one

Just this once

I guess I can be honest for once

And say that…

I want to take care of you

Not as an older child who shared your shade

But with the love that time has made

I don’t want to watch over you like we were young

I want to love you with everything I've become
