My Mother

Stay soft, she said,

wear your softness proudly,

as it is like a pearl,

emerging from the depths of your soul.

My mother always had this incandescent light in her eyes,

her rough palms,

shielding me from it all,

from all the ugliness, and from all the violence.

Mother,

I am not even the moon, not even a star

yet you act like the ocean’s tide,

pulling me along,

seeing me for who I have become,

wearing it as part of your pride.

I think the world is held up by people like my mother,

kind, loving, and full of feeling.

When I am six feet under,

inevitably, maggots will crawl through the cages of my decaying body,

but they will feel my mother’s love,

and would mistake it as their own warmth and pulse.
